Charcoal and rust. The embroidery reads almost like frost, until the colour breaks through.
The field is covered edge to edge in a dense embroidered vine, its leaves and buds worked entirely in ivory thread against the charcoal wool ground, fine, feathery, and almost lace like in its coverage. Moving through this vine at regular intervals, large paisleys are placed with quiet authority, each one built up in layered rust, ochre, olive, and deep maroon, their curled tips picked out in a contrasting outline that makes them sit forward from the ivory lattice around them. The contrast between the cool, monochrome vine and the warm, multicoloured paisleys gives the shawl its particular character, restrained in one register, richly coloured in the next.
The border shifts the palette further. A band of embroidered florals and berry clusters in the same rust and ochre tones runs along the edge, bordered by a fine striped guard border in maroon and cream. Beyond this, a wide plain charcoal panel is left bare, giving the eye somewhere to rest before the fringed edge.
